In the Middle Ages, the Count of May was chosen in jousting tournaments. The winner of the tournament was declared the best warrior of Riga, received the title of May Count for one year and the right to call his chosen one the May Countess.
Today, any participant of the holiday over 18 years old, the winner of the tournament, can become the May Count.
The winner of the tournament receives the title of the May Count, and has the right to choose his lady of the heart from the ladies present and call her the May Countess. This couple becomes a symbol of the holiday throughout the year, until the next festival. The couple symbolizes spring, love and prosperity throughout the city.
In the Middle Ages, only people of noble birth, nobles and aristocrats could compete for the title of May Count. But we live today, and our holiday is for all of us. Therefore, any man has a chance to become the hero of the day - and the year!
